I knew that Cheval Blanc had made an exceptional wine in 2008, but I didn't remember it as wonderful as it was yesterday. The Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend shows so much richness and power. It has wonderful length and finesse. I tasted the wine with Cheval president Pierre Lurton and he said they used a tiny bit more Cabernet Franc in the blend in 2008. I was also impressed with the second wine, Petit Cheval. Normally I have been underwhelmed with the PC, but the 2008 is outstanding.
2008 Château Cheval Blanc, St.-Emilion: I am really impressed with this. It is powerful and rich with so much blueberry, vanilla and spice on the nose and palate. It's full and very spicy, and fruity on the palate, but remains refined and subtle. Rich and polished tannins too. This needs at least five years of bottle age to come around. 95 points
2008 Le Petit Cheval, St.-Emilion: I am surprised by the quality of the second wine this year, considering the difficulty of the vintage. Pierre Lurton, president of Cheval Blanc, said that they have really tried to improve the quality of the second wine, and it shows. It shows lots of blueberry and chocolate character – serious Merlot character. Full and round with slightly chew tannins. Give it two years to come around. 90 pointsComments
