Alsace: Domaine Albert Mann – Pinot Noir

Friday, August 28, 2015

Domaine Albert Mann has grown to be one of the most prestigious estates in Alsace. Founded by the late Albert Mann, it’s now managed by Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, and their wives Marie-Claire (daughter of founder Albert Mann) and Marie-Thérese. The domaine has a total of 21 hectares, which includes five hectares under Grand Cru appellation, two lieu-dit, and one monopole. The Barthelmé brothers began working with biodynamics in 1997, and since 2010, the total extension of the vineyards has been biodynamically farmed.

In this video, Maurice Barthelmé, co-winemaker and vineyard manager at Albert Mann, comments on how to make a great pinot noir in Alsace. For Maurice the two essentials for making a great pinot in the region are meticulous viticulture and appropiate terroir selection.

With a total of four single vineyard bottlings, which include vines grown in Grand Cru appellation and one monopole, the Barthelmé's pinots are some of the finest expressions in the region.
