Battle of the Limitadas

Thursday, February 24, 2011

On the way to Havana last weekend, I stopped into see one of my best friends Max Gutmann, the agent for Cuban cigars in Mexico. In between wine tastings and tequila comparings, I dropped into his store in the area of Mexico City’s Polanco and we decided to have a taste off – or smoke off, for better words. A couple of 2010 Edicion Limitadas seemed like the best way to go. These are like all the ELs. They feature the darker and aged wrappers, which claim to be a couple years aged, instead of the usual year or less for Cuban wrappers. I knew I was in trouble when Max picked the Montecristo Grand Edmundo. I remember that cigar when I smoked it in Havana in 2010 a few weeks before it came out. La bomba! But I thought that my Partagas Serie D No. 5 might give it a run for its money.
