One of the big days during my two-week tasting tour of Bordeaux for 2011 futures, or en primeur, was visiting the Right Bank. I spent the day checking out some of the top names in Pomerol and St. Emilion.
Not only was it fascinating tasting the wines with the winemakers, but I also enjoyed the discussions as well about the vintage. It’s seems apparent that Right Bank estates that used plenty of Cabernet Franc in their blends produced better wines for the most part.
In order of the video, I first tasted at Château Petrus with Olivier Berrouet, then I moved to Lafleur to try the great Pomerol with owner Baptiste Guinaudeau, who also poured his wines, both white and red, from Grand Village in the Bordeaux appellation. Then I stopped in to taste with Figeac’s Eric d'Aramon, and finally I had a good conversation and tasting with Denis Durantou, the owner and winemaker of L’Eglise-Clinet in Pomerol. It was just a handful of the more than a dozen winemakers I saw that day.
