Bordeaux 2012 in Bottle: My Impression

Monday, February 9, 2015

James just released his Top 100 Red 2012 Bordeaux. The 2012 vintage in Bordeaux was indeed another difficult one, particularly for the late ripening varieties like cabernet sauvignon. It was clearly a successful vintage for merlot and cabernet franc-dominated wines though, and Pomerol and Saint Emilion were two of the more consistent appellations in terms of quality.

The Médoc appellations, with the late ripening cabernet, had it more difficult with scattered rains that interrupted harvest in late September and mid-October. However, James found many of the wines delicate, balanced and fruit-forward. He also believes that 2012 could be a new 2001 or 1985.
