Campania: Donnachiara

Friday, August 14, 2015

Campania is one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy. It's exciting for a number of reasons, including the exceptional quality of wines produced from small and upcoming wineries like Donnachiara.

Founded in 2005, Donnachiara is a relatively small and new winery located in the province of Avellino, Montefalcione. While the winery itself is new, the Petitto family has a long and decorated history of winemaking. The owner, Ilaria Petitto, sees Donnachiara's small size as an advantage because it allows them to work in the vineyard and cellar much more intimately, which yields a higher quality of wine.

Donnachiara only make wines from Campania's autochthonous grape varieties. It produces a range of white wines from fiano di avellino, greco di tufo and falanghina grapes. They also produce four red wines, all of which come from the aglianico grape. As Ilaria explains, aglianico is known for its astringent tannins, but Donnachiara tailors its wines to deliver a more approachable aglianico that is ready to drink young.
