Campania: Mastroberardino

Thursday, August 13, 2015

Mastroberardino was founded in 1878, making it the oldest winery in Italy's Campania region. Aside from owning the largest proportion of vineyards in Irpina, Mastroberardino is also responsible of reconstructing lost Roman vineyards in the city of Pompeii - the famous archaeological site.

Mastroberardino is a symbol of tradition and is also responsible for recuperating grape varieties such as Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino. Many of these grape types were, up to a certain point, almost extinct. In this video, winery owner Piero Mastrobeardino explains what is it that makes Campania's Irpina one of the most exciting wine regions in Italy.

Despite being located in the south, Irpina, is characterized by its cold winters and warm summers. Days are very warm and sunny during the grape growing season but they are also very cool at night. These contrasts produce ripe grapes that maintain their acidity. And thus, the wines of the region are very fruity but fresh and crisp - both white and red. Watch the video to find out about Matroberardino's incredible legacy.
