El Laguito Factory

Thursday, March 10, 2011

El Laguito has to be Havana’s most prestigious cigar factory. It is the home, or mother factory, of Cuba’s world famous Cohiba cigar. I have been going to the former palace-turned-cigar-factory since the early 1990s. And I have been there every year ever since. In fact, I was there twice in the last couple of weeks.

What I love about this small factory, which has just over 100 rollers, is that it is always in a state of change. One could say it’s different everyday because there is such a family ambiance to the workplace. If you talk to many of the workers, they are related: mothers, sons, fathers, and cousins. You get the idea. Find out what the biggest change is at El Laguito right now, though I think that many of you already know. I will give you a clue: It starts with a B.
