Figeac: 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Château Figeac makes a special red in Bordeaux. One of the top estates of the region of St. Emilion, it’s been vying for the top position of the appellation for decades with Cheval Blanc and Ausone. It has a unique character that gives it an earthy, traditional style. Some attribute it to the unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. The vineyard is planted to about one-third Cabernet Sauvignon, one-third Cabernet Franc, and one-third Merlot.

I did this tasting on camera last year. The 2009, which I think may be one of the best ever from Figeac, was still in barrel. Owner Eric d'Aramon, the son-in-law of the late owner Thierry Manoncourt, organized the tasting for me. I enjoyed his comments on their winemaker at Figeac at the end of the video.
