Gagliole: From Banker To Winemaker

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Have you ever dreamed of giving up you day job and becoming a winemaker? Thomas Baer left as the owner of the largest private Swiss bank in the world, Julius Baer, to make wine in Tuscany.

His Super Tuscan wines come from his estate Gagliole in the heart of Chianti Classico, just about a 45-minute drive east of Florence. Gagiole has been called a new Solaia by some wine collectors and critics – myself included.

The Gagiole is a structured blend of sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon, but he also makes a tiny-production single-vineyard wine called Pecchia.

In this video, Thomas explains why he left a successful career, gives a presentation of the winery, and talks about an innovation he's brought to winemaking at large in Italy.
