“Last night was a real bash,” exclaimed Adrian Cheong, the co-propietor of Château Haut-Brisson (the first Chinese-owned vineyard in Bordeaux), the afternoon following The Wine Collectors’ Dinner to launch the start of Great Wines of Bordeaux by Hong Kong Tatler and James Suckling. Cheong, along with many of his peers from the great winemaking region, came together for an evening fuelled by bottles of the greatest ready-to-drink vintages, lively conversation, and a musical serenade by Steinway Artist Warren Lee. “It was really wonderful to see all our friends from Bordeaux in Hong Kong and everyone opening great bottles,” Cheong continued.
Held at the Harbour View ballroom at The Four Seasons hotel, the night began with an intimate cocktail session featuring chilled glasses of Louis Roederer Brut NV before the gala dinner began with opening remarks by Edipresse CEO Barrie C. Goodridge and wine editor James Suckling. Notable guests included Henry and Lisa Tang, Chee-chen and Harriet Tung, Didier and Michele Li, Ronald and Johanna Arculli, Paolo Pong, Peter Lam, Patricio de la Fuente Saez, Ronald and Reggie Kwok, Alan and Yenn Lo, David and Avisha Harilela, Hamilton and Yolanda Tang, Louis and Janice Choy, Stanley and Leigh Chou, Esther Ma, Margery Au, Vanessa Hwang, KC and Amy Chow, Dominique and Jane Lee.
The gala dinner proudly showcased the best of fine Cantonese food courtesy of Lung King Heen (a Hong Kong Tatler Best Restaurants Guide top 20 venue) paired with Bordeaux wines. With an elegant menu to go with wines from each of the participating wineries featuring whole barbecued suckling pig; fresh sliced abalone and seasonal vegetables in oyster sauce; and sweet doubled-boiled egg with ice sugar matched with dessert wines from Château Guiraud and Château Suduiraut, it was a fitting tribute to Hong Kong’s sophisticated wining and dining scene where the finest of east and west co-exist in harmony.
Warren Lee provided the majestic soundtrack to the evening as he performed two contemporary piano pieces by the late American composer George Gershwin.
For many of the vintners, it was a perfect prelude to the excitement of the Grand Tasting the following afternoon. Anna Fedou, Brand Ambassador of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, raved: “The combination of the dinner with the event is quite a perfect match.”
