In California’s Alexander Valley, Jim Rickards of J. Rickards Vineyards & Winery tells Editor-at-Large Jim Gordon how his vineyard – first planted in 1908 by Rosa Brignoli – was designed to make a “field blend” long before modern winemaking tools existed. Each vine variety was planted side by side so that when the grapes are picked, the field itself creates the blend. Over a century later, those vines are still crafting one of his most distinctive wines each year.
