New Bordeaux Masterclass Highlights Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival 2020

Monday, November 16, 2020

James organized a special online masterclass for this year’s Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival on Friday, November 13, for key media influencers in Europe and Asia focusing on “New Bordeaux” which included a dry white from Sauternes, a delicate rosé from the Médoc and an amphora-produced red from the Côtes de Bordeaux Castillon. It was his first live online tasting conducted with media.

“It was a really fun and informative show,” said James Suckling, after the 36-minute online masterclass. “I was happy to taste and discuss some of the new wines of Bordeaux with other media and they all seemed happy and surprised by the quality of the wines, most of which cost about USD$20 a bottle. The image for Bordeaux, particularly in Hong Kong, is often misunderstood as only expensive and great wines. Bordeaux has so much more to offer and it remains one of my reference points as a wine critic.”

Suckling noted during the show that Hong Kong remains the No. 1 export market for Bordeaux, larger than the People’s Republic of China, the United States and the United Kingdom. So when the Hong Kong Tourism Board asked him to organize a masterclass, he chose Bordeaux as a topic that he hoped would shed a new light on France’s premier wine region.

The media session was a warm up for the consumer “New Bordeaux" online masterclass taking place on November 21, Saturday, at 2 pm in Hong Kong. The wines included Le Blanc Sec de Suduiraut Bordeaux Blanc 2019, Château Giscours Bordeaux Le Rosé de Giscours 2019, and Château Le Rey Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Les Argileuses 2019. The wines for this Saturday’s online masterclass can be purchased in advance at https://www.klook.com/en-US/activity/50700-james-suckling/.

Saturday’s masterclass will be on James’s Instagram and Facebook Live as well as recorded for later viewing. It will be in English and Cantonese.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has taken the 2020 Hong Kong Wine & Dine online due to the pandemic, offering dozens of masterclasses on food and wine. In previous years the event has been one of the largest wine and food events in the world, attracting more than 150,000 people over four days.
