Paolo Scavino: 2005, 2006

Friday, January 28, 2011

Enrico Scavino has been making stylish Barolos at his family estate, Paolo Scavino, for decades. But in recent years there has been a gradual change to even more precise and super clean nebbiolos. This has been primarily to the involvement of his two daughters, Enrica and Elisa.

Elisa is a trained winemaker and is focusing even more on the unique soils and microclimates of their tiny vineyards for Barolo. I tasted a range of their Barolos from the 2005 and 2006 vintage. And as much as I like the 2006s, I am still partial to 2005.

Ratings: 2006 Paolo Scavino Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva: This wont be in the market until 2012, but what a wine now. I love the minerals, flowers, and plum character. The light strawberry notes remind me of a fine Pinot Noir. Full and racy with a very, very long finish. I am really impressed. 95 points 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo: I really like the floral and nice fruit aromas in this wine. Full bodied, chewy tannins, and a silky finish. Tight but pretty. Could use some time in the bottle, wait until 2013. 91 points 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric: Flowers, mushrooms, and dark fruits dominate the nose. Full and velvety with lots of pretty fruit and a long dense finish. This still has some room to grow, check back in 2013. 93 points 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi: Ripe fruit, fresh flowers, and orange peel in the nose. Full bodied with chewy tannins and a medium length rich velvety finish. 92 points 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio: Less than 90 points 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc: I really like the dried red fruit, almost stewed, with berries and spices. Full bodied, tannic and powerful. This is a huge wine with a tremendous finish. Hold off on this until 2015. 94 points 2005 Paolo Scavino Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva: This will arrive on the market in 2011. This is a powerful wine with chewy tannins. Perhaps slightly angular. Full bodied and velvety on the palate, but a bit mouth puckering on the finish. 93 points
