Saxum: The Vineyard

Monday, October 3, 2011

Saxum is an emerging superstar in California wine. The Paso Robles winery makes amazing reds with mostly Rhone Valley grape varieties. In addition, the family sells some of the grapes from their famous vineyards, such as James Berry Vineyard and Bone Rock.

They are located in the Templeton Gap/Willow Creek area. Most of the head-pruned vines are grown on steep hillsides. I walked through the vineyards one sunny morning with owner and winemaker Justin Smith. He explained what is so unique about his vineyards and wines.
