Sine Qua Non: The Bottles

Thursday, October 27, 2011

One of the most extraordinary things about Sine Qua Non is the oddly-shaped bottles the wine has come in over the years. Perfectly in keeping with his life-long march to an extremely different drummer, Manfred has sometimes chosen bottle shapes that are so quirky that the glass manufacturer refused to sell them to him.

As marvellous and delightfully mad as the bottles are, I pointed out to Manfred that they created a problem for collectors because they would never fit into standard wine-storage racks. Manfred smiled back impishly, and said, "I know."
