Australia: William Downie, The Vineyard

Monday, June 25, 2012

James visited William Downie in his Gippsland vineyard in Victoria, Australia. After spending several years in Burgundy, Downie decided to return to his native Australia to find out how would Pinot Noir expresses itself in Australian soil. His main focus is to make wines that are things in themselves, true expressions of the land where the vines are grown, as opposed to pushing the wine in any referential direction. This video takes place in the Gippsland vineyard. The soil of the vineyard is made up of red volcanic clay loam and it stands at an elevation of 200 meters. Watch the video to hear Downie himself explain what is it that makes the vineyard so special.
