Cabernet sauvignon and climate change was the focus of one of the most interesting master classes at Great Wines of the World San Francisco on March 8, with winemakers and industry leaders from Chile, Italy, Bordeaux, Argentina and Napa Valley joining James Suckling to taste six outstanding cabernets and discuss a question that is reshaping fine wine today: has climate change helped or hurt cabernet sauvignon? The answer was not simple. For some regions, especially Bordeaux, Chile and parts of Italy, warmer growing seasons have brought more consistent ripening and greater precision. For others, including parts of Argentina and California, the challenges of drought, heat spikes, wildfire and changing water supply are becoming more serious. It was a lively and thoughtful discussion with real insight from the people living it in the vineyards and cellars.
