In this never-before-seen video from our archive, James attended a tasting of Château La Conseillante in Wandsworth, just outside of London, with top wine tasters from all over England (including Jancis Robinson, Neal Martin, and Father Christmas!) and the Farr Vintners team. La Conseillante's winemaker, Jean-Michel Laporte, also flew in for the tasting, which showcased 40 vintages from the estate.
Located in the center of Pomerol, La Conseillante produces wines with balanced structure that are delicious even decades later. When it comes to the more recent vintages of 2005 and 2009, however, the debate ensues in the video as to which is better. Jean-Michel makes his case for the 2009, but watch to see what the group decides.
Overall, James notes that a distinct style is present throughout all 40 vintages tasted -- from 1945 to 2009 -- and Jean-Michel agrees. He says that as a winemaker, he can't dominate the terroir, but just handle it and give it directions. And in the end, the terroir makes the wine.
