Tuscan Collectibles: Valdicava Madonna Del Piano – The Vineyard

Valdicava’s single vineyard Brunello di Montalcino Madonna del Piano is one of the great wines of Tuscany, if not Italy. It is a wine completely based on great soil and climate, not to mention fabulous viticulture from owner Vincenzo Abbruzzese. The wine always shows dark fruits and a fresh porcini character, both young and old. It’s structured and tannic yet polished and reserved. It is an archetypal Brunello di Montalcino for me.

I met Vincenzo in the Madonna del Piano vineyard this summer, and we were caught in showers. We didn’t let the rain bother us. Vincenzo discussed and showed why he believes in the special quality of his vineyard and wine. It’s why the Valdicava Brunello de Montalcino Madonna del Piano is my No. 6 wine on my list of the 12 Best Collectible Tuscan Wines.
