San Giusto a Rentennano is an exciting winery in Gaiole in Chianti within the Chianti Classico appellation. Its medieval battlements, once used to divide the city-states of Siena and Florence, still rise up above the skyline and today these elevated sites provide excellent diurnal temperature variation for around 31 hectares under vine. Indeed, while the wines here show noteworthy minerality and freshness, there’s also a gravitas about them. The Super Tuscan Percarlo, a selection of the estate’s best sangiovese, is characterized by its immense structure and tannin backbone — it’s more akin to a top Brunello than a Chianti Classico. Check out this video of our recent visit there to meet owner and winemaker Luca Martini di Cigala. Look out for the shots of the straw mats the winery uses to make its Vin Santo, which happens to be one of the best for the category. The estate is organically certified.
