2005 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château

I drank a fabulous wine last Saturday night following the final Bellissimo Brunello wine tasting in San Francisco. I went with some friends to RN74 restaurant, which has an amazing wine list full of Burgundy, and a 2005 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Clos du Château caught my eye. It was expensive at $200, but I love the wines of Liger-Belair. It’s a super popular name among wine collectors in Hong Kong too.

The Clos is a tiny single vineyard in the village of Vosne-Romanée manee in the Côte d’Or that Louis-Michel Liger-Belair owns. It’s biodynamically farmed like all of his vineyards, regardless if he owns or leases them.

This wine was amazing. Maybe I was overly enthusiastic, but it took my breath away. It had such vibrant energy, precision, and balance. It showed aromas of ginseng, spices, light prunes and dried strawberries that followed to a stony character. It was full with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. Everyone who tasted it just couldn’t believe the quality here. It will be even better in five or six years. It was a perfect wine that night: 100 points.

Maybe I got carried away with the moment. But I will never forget that wine. I only wonder how it compares to the other Liger-Belair wines from 2005 such as the great grand cru La Romanée?

I tried to order another bottle of the list, but they said it was the “last bottle.” Shame.
