Napa Valley badly needed a vintage like 2023, and so did wine drinkers. After the heat-scarred, uneven wines of 2022, the new vintage offers rare consistency, renewed confidence and a clear reason to pay attention to Napa again at a time when falling consumption, swollen inventories and a broader market correction are reshaping the region.

We tasted nearly 1,400 Napa Valley red wines from the 2023 vintage, with a whopping 20 earning 100 points, and 120 scoring 98 points or higher. Those are impressive statistics, but numbers alone fail to capture what makes this vintage so special. What emerged over months of tasting was not simply a collection of great wines at the very top of the quality pyramid, but a level of quality and consistency that stretched across Napa Valley from its most celebrated estates to its smallest boutique producers.

The growing season itself helps explain why. A wet winter replenished soils and reservoirs after years of drought. Spring arrived late, slowing vine development and extending the growing season. Summer remained remarkably moderate, free from the prolonged heat spikes that have become increasingly common across California. Harvest unfolded at a leisurely pace, stretching well into October for some AVAs. For many growers, it was one of the longest and most comfortable harvests they could remember.

“It was a vintage where you had to have patience and nerve, as the season went well into October for some varietals,” said consulting winemaker Jean Hoefliger, whose work at AXR, Merryvale and The Debate, among others, gave him a unique perspective across multiple vineyard sites and appellations.

That patience became one of the defining themes of the vintage. Unlike recent years when winemakers found themselves racing against heat events, dehydration or looming weather systems, 2023 offered something increasingly rare: time. “In 2023 nobody was rushed,” said Realm Cellars Director of Winegrowing Chris Cooney. “You could pick any time you wanted to because there was no pressure.”

Helen Keplinger, one of Napa Valley’s most respected consulting winemakers, who runs her own label and has worked for, among others Bryant Family Vineyard and Arrow & Branch, experienced the same phenomenon. “We usually harvest around Sept. 3 to 7, and in ’23 we didn’t start until Oct. 7,” she said.

It’s evident in tasting that the extra month made all the difference. Across cabernet sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions, the wines display a combination of concentration, freshness and precision that is difficult to achieve. There is plenty of fruit intensity, but it is accompanied by vibrant acidity and finely integrated tannins. The wines possess structure for long-term aging, yet many are already remarkably approachable. They are not oversized wines. Instead, they are complete wines, with every element working together in many bottles.

Few people witnessed the vintage from as many vantage points as Philippe Melka. Through projects including Lithology and numerous consulting relationships throughout the valley, Melka helped shape some of Napa’s most compelling wines. His perfect-scoring Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard 2023 stands among the finest expressions of the vintage, capturing both the power of the vineyard and the precision of the growing season.

Melka's influence extended well beyond Lithology. Working alongside longtime winemaker Stephanie Putnam at Raymond Vineyards and JCB, he helped guide a lineup of outstanding wines, including the precise and pure Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Oakville District Collection 2023 and the charming  and rustic JCB Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley PHI 2023.

The pedigree of Napa Valley’s great vineyards played a central role in the story of 2023, none more so than To Kalon. The renowned Oakville vineyard appeared repeatedly among the highest-scoring wines in this report. In addition to the Lithology, Schrader also earned perfect scores for both its Heritage Clone and Old Sparky bottlings, as did Vida Valiente’s Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon and To Kalon Vineyard Company’s H.W.C. bottling.

To Kalon shouldn’t be mentioned without bringing up the MacDonald name. Graeme MacDonald's family farms what many collectors and vintners regard as one of the most prized sections of the original To Kalon vineyard, and MacDonald Vineyards continues to reinforce its reputation as one of Napa Valley’s benchmark producers (although they’re not allowed to use the To Kalon name on their label for legal reasons). Their wines remain among the purest expressions of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, and the consistency shown throughout the 2023 vintage only strengthened that reputation.

AXR, Arrow & Branch, Alpha Omega, Revana, Tor, The Debate and Amici also made exceptional bottles from Beckstoffer To Kalon vineyard in 2023. At Arrow & Branch, Jennifer Williams described a growing season that rewarded patience. Her Arrow & Branch Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Oakville Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard 2023 beautifully captures the harmony that defines the vintage. It is a wine that combines richness with precision, allowing the pedigree of the vineyard to shine through without excess.

Nearby, the wife-and-husband team of Annie Favia and Andy Erickson at Favia Wines experienced many of the same advantages. The 2023 releases represent a remarkable showing for Favia. The winery’s Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley bottling illustrate the unique strengths of each site. Coombsville brings freshness, tension and aromatic lift, while Oakville contributes depth, structure and power. The resulting wines are among the most complete of the vintage.

Erickson’s influence was visible elsewhere throughout the valley, particularly through his work at Alpha Omega. The Alpha Omega Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 and Beckstoffer To Kalon 2023 reinforce the winery’s position among Napa Valley’s elite producers.

One of the most compelling aspects of 2023 was the way individual vineyards expressed themselves so clearly. Vine Hill Ranch, alongside To Kalon, delivered some of the finest wines of the year. Located along the western benchlands of Oakville, the site consistently produces wines of depth, complexity and remarkable balance. The estate’s own VHR Cabernet Sauvignon nearly earned a perfect score, while Tor, Memento Mori, J.H. Wheeler and Kinsman Eades also delivered outstanding samples. In many ways, Vine Hill Ranch is a microcosm of the 2023 vintage itself. The wines possess concentration but also freshness and energy. There is power, but detail too.

It is hard to find a producer who demonstrated the success of the vintage more clearly than Sam Kaplan. Through Memento Mori and Vida Valiente, Kaplan was responsible for two of the perfect-scoring wines in this report, the Memento Mori Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023 and Vida Valiente’s Beckstoffer To Kalon bottling. His Memento Mori Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard 2023 was just on the cusp of perfection.

Kaplan made the most of the cooler conditions, producing wines that combine generosity and precision. Their tannins melt across the palate, creating a seamless texture that defines many of the finest wines of the year.

Elsewhere, Thomas Rivers Brown continued to demonstrate why he remains one of Napa Valley’s most influential consultants. Brown first gained recognition through his work at Shafer Vineyards before building one of the most successful consulting portfolios in the valley. I tasted with Brown at Mending Wall Winery, where he produces wines for numerous clients alongside his own projects.

Among Brown’s highlights was the Mending Wall Cabernet Franc Napa Valley Oakville Detert Vineyard 2023, from a vineyard located behind To Kalon alongside the MacDonald property. Long regarded as one of North America’s finest sites for cabernet franc, Detert once again delivered a wine of exceptional character and precision.

The historic names also reminded collectors why they remain so important to Napa Valley’s story. Tim Mondavi celebrated his 50th vintage in Napa, with his Continuum Napa Valley Sage Mountain Vineyard 2023 showing all the clarity and freshness of the vintage, still mountainous in nature while capturing the optimal moment at picking to craft a wine that will be celebrated for decades to come. The story was almost identical further down the Vaca Range ridgeline at Dalla Valle, which once again underscored the pedigree of eastern Oakville with another outstanding cabernet sauvignon.

On the western side of the valley, in the Mayacamas mountain range, Philip Togni's 2023 offerings are seamlessly approachable now yet enticing for their aging capacity, a hallmark of cabernet sauvignon grown on Spring Mountain. These are wines full of structure, freshness and mineral tension.

Just a stone's throw down the mountain, the resurgence of Stony Hill under the new stewardship of Carlton McCoy, alongside winemaker Reid Griggs, continued with wines that capture the freshness and energy of the historic estate, reinforcing why Spring Mountain remains one of Napa Valley’s most distinctive appellations. And look out for the newcomer on the mountain, Bergman. With the help of Abreu Farming and Nigel Kinsman, this is a project only just getting started with the potential of the AVA.

Howell Mountain also excelled, led by Outpost Wines, whose True Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 stood among the finest mountain wines reviewed this year, reinforcing the appellation’s ability to combine power with freshness in this exceptional growing season.

Other stalwarts of the valley shined just as brightly in 2023, including Bryant Family Vineyard and its 100-point flagship cabernet sauvignon, Spottswoode and its Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley St. Helena Estate 2023 and Eisele Vineyard with its Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023 and Piedras 2023.

The cooler reaches of Coombsville also enjoyed a remarkable year. Paul Hobbs produced one of the perfect-scoring bottles in this report with the Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Coombsville Nathan Coombs Estate 2023a wine that captures the freshness and complexity that have made the appellation increasingly sought after. Its combination of purity, structure and aromatic detail places it among the greatest wines of the vintage.

Meanwhile, newer and smaller producers continued to push the quality conversation forward. Fe’s Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Spring Mountain District 2023 was among the finest mountain wines we rated, while Seven Stones, under the direction of Aaron Pott, hit a harmonious note with its Seven Stones Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023. Aaron and Claire Pott’s Mount Veeder Incubo 2023 also showed how Pott's wines beautifully capture a hallmark of the vintage: despite their concentration, they retain remarkable freshness and site expression. Rather than overwhelming the palate, they invite exploration.

At Kinsman Eades, Nigel Kinsman delivered one of the strongest performances of the report with a trio of outstanding bottlings from Sleeping Lady Vineyard, M Bar Ranch and Vine Hill Ranch. The wines showcase Kinsman’s ability to combine intensity with precision, a trait that appears repeatedly throughout the 2023 vintage.

In Stags Leap District, several producers delivered some of the year’s most compelling wines, benefiting from the cooler season and moving away from the more plump, early-drinking releases of the 2022s. Among them were Odette and its deeply perfumed Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Reserve 2023, PlumpJack and CADE. The hallmark bottling from Stags Leap came a little further south down Silverado Trail, where FUTO’s 5500 Estate Vineyard hit the 100-point plateau of perfection.

Napa Valley has produced legendary vintages before. Some are remembered because a handful of wines achieved greatness. Others because they delivered extraordinary longevity. The achievement of 2023 feels different. This is a vintage where greatness was distributed throughout the valley with unusual consistency across many diverse AVAs and vineyards, both valley floor and mountain sites alike. These wines speak clearly of place, season and craftsmanship, and they remind us why great vintages still matter.
