The 2010 and 2009 vintages are the new benchmarks for Bordeaux, and perhaps red wines of the world. The vintages produced bold and dynamic wines with wonderfully ripe fruit yet structured tannins and racy acidity. They have redefined what great modern Bordeaux is all about.
I wonder what people will be saying in 30 years about 2010? In the end, will it be better than 2009? I am honestly not sure, but I have already written that I have a slight preference for the sexier style of 2009. But 2010 is so damn good as well!
Discussing the two vintages really is like talking more than 20 years ago about 1989 and 1990, the last two great twin vintages of Bordeaux. I always said that 1989 was better than 1990 due to its better depth of fruit and structure. I loved it the first time I tasted it from barrel. Yet others preferred the racier and more refined 1990. I think, in Bordeaux at least, most now believe 1989 is better than 1990, although great wines exist in both vintages.
It’s these debates that make Bordeaux so much fun to drink. And we are going to have a lot of fun drinking 2010 and 2009 for a long, long time!
I have already posted two reports on the vintage. My first posting focused on my 100 best 2010 Bordeaux including 11 perfect wines. The next report focused on all the excellent wines I scored 94 to 92 points underlying the great breath of quality of the wines in 2010. This report includes my remaining 2010 Bordeaux tasting notes in my database. There are so many excellent 2010s to buy and to enjoy.
I still have a number of 2010s to taste including the stable of reds from the owner of St. Emilion’s Pavie and Pavie-Decesse, Gerard Perse. His top wines were not bottled yet when I was in Bordeaux in January tasting. I am looking forward to the tasting.
I am not sure what more I can say about 2010, or 2009? These two vintages are glorious twins that represent the best wine can be. They are wines that we are going to enjoy tasting and drinking for the rest of our lives. I only wish I bought more of them!
