Marco de Grazia on JamesSuckling.com’s 2025 Italian Wine of the Year

Monday, September 8, 2025

The Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso San Lorenzo 2023 is our Italian Wine of the Year for 2025. It comes from the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, and is a compelling example of why the region now competes with the world’s best. Winemaker Marco de Grazia is the founder of Tenuta delle Terre Nere and a pioneer of Etna winemaking. James visited the estate earlier in the year to ask Marco how they made such a spectacular wine.

De Grazia describes the wine as having the perfect "balance between the structure and the richness and the elegance that shines right through." It’s a pure volcanic expression that impresses with its clarity and detail. It has a fleshy palate with full body, and crisp refreshing acidity and velvety tannins with a slightly dusty yet ripe texture.
