Shiraz isn’t just Australia’s most planted grape – it’s the heart and soul of the country’s wine industry, offering a rich, bold expression of place, with regions like the Barossa, Eden and Clare Valleys as well as McLaren Vale producing some of the best renditions.

Before the 1950s, Australian producers mostly used shiraz for blending and for fortified wines, but then the variety’s reputation took off, led by Penfolds’ Grange. While Australian shiraz is still typically more fruit-forward, rich and soft compared with the earthier syrah expressions of France’s Rhone Valley, some of the best wines are superbly refined and structured, with lighter oak use and improved management of very old vines.

The wines on this list are fantastic examples at 94 points and above, all priced under $100. From the warm Barossa Valley, the Yalumba Shiraz Barossa Valley The Steeple 2018 is a tribute to classic Australian reds of the last century. It’s made from biodynamically grown grapes from vines planted in 1919, and it’s deeply rich yet vibrant, with muscular tannins and a long, velvety finish, giving it excellent potential to develop.

Torbreck's The Struie is polished and silky with fantastic fruit.

The John Duval Wines Shiraz Barossa Entity 2022 is a juicy and ripe wine, with fine, well-integrated tannins, plus spicy and mineral nuances. John Duval was one of the previous chief winemakers at Penfolds and now crafts his own exceptional wines.

Another fantastic expression of the Barossa region is the Torbreck Barossa The Struie 2021. It’s medium-bodied, polished and silky, with fantastic fruit, mineral and spice character – a delicious wine for both drinking now and future cellaring.

Knappstein senior winemaker Michael Kane visited our Hong Kong tasting office last September to unveil his latest releases. From an earlier vintage, the Knappstein Shiraz Clare Valley Mayor's Vineyard 2020 is a serious, full-bodied shiraz.

Nearby in Clare Valley, the Knappstein Shiraz Clare Valley Mayor's Vineyard 2020 is a serious shiraz: full-bodied and layered with crushed-stone, bark and blackberry flavors. It’s a mineral, savory wine from a cooler, elevated site on Clare Valley’s eastern ridge, at 500 meters altitude, and it’s also a steal at under $40.

Extremely old, low-yielding vines are also abundant further south in McLaren Vale, producing concentrated wines like The d'Arenberg McLaren Vale The Dead Arm 2018 – an expressive, bold and fragrant shiraz, full of spice, dried-herb and iodine notes. It’s in prime drinking condition right now and will continue to evolve.

The Hickinbotham Shiraz McLaren Vale Brooks Road 2019, meanwhile, has impressive depth and power, as well as elegance, with subtly spicy and cedary oak influences to the berry and plum fruit. And for a more peppery shiraz, the S.C. Pannell Shiraz McLaren Vale Field Street 2021 is a dark-fruited, medium- to full-bodied expression that is packed full of white-and black-pepper flavors, and offers the best value of the lot, at an incredible $15.

Whether you’re drawn to the classic richness of Barossa, the vibrance of McLaren Vale or the elegance of Clare Valley, these wines offer fantastic drinking now.
